Interview like a Politician: Conquer the Interview

And now, just like that, you’re here. The day of the interview has arrived. Take a breath. You’ve done your prep, you know your strengths, you know the position, you know the company, you’re ready to take your time to answer any curve balls thoughtfully and intelligently.

First thing to do in the morning is to use your company culture research to help inform how you dress for the interview. Don’t wear a three piece suit if the CEO comes to work in jeans. On the other hand, if the CEO wears a tie, so should you. If the CEO loves maxi-skirts and jean jackets find your version of that. Dress one cut above the office’s usual Monday attire. Fit in, but look professional. You don’t work there quite yet. ;)

And then you’ve arrived. You’ve checked in at the front desk and the receptionist says their name. Repeat it back to them -- remember their name. Write it in your phone if you need to. Make strong eye contact when checking in and act with confidence and competence. Be polite, always using please and thank you. Yes -- manners matter in interviews from the moment you walk in the door. You’re not just interviewing with the hiring manager, you’re auditioning for a role in that office. There may be cameras, seeing how you interact with others -- not to sound paranoid, but assume you are always under scrutiny.

If someone offers you a drink at any point -- accept it. Get coffee or tea if you want it, or if you’d rather just have water that’s perfect too. Accepting this offer shows gratitude allows you to take part in an important custom of hospitality that creates a sense of ease for everyone.

Again with the names -- learn your interviewer’s name (if you didn’t have access to that information beforehand) and use it throughout the interview. People love hearing their own names -- it makes them feel seen and connected to the person speaking. You know who else uses names? Politicians. There’s an old rumor that a good politician will use your name and make eye contact with you three times within the first five minutes of meeting them. Rumor or fact -- it’s a good way to connect with people quickly. Once more for those in the back row: LEARN NAMES and MAKE EYE CONTACT.

Both of these will help you be approachable and relatable, someone they want to bring into their office every day. Be kind throughout the interview, give sincere compliments and ask questions, especially at the beginning during that “small talk” part. Don’t let it be awkward. Take a look back at our Networking posts (Find Part One here, and Part Two here.) for additional tips in this department.

Throughout the interview, remember not to downplay your strengths or your experience -- you are there to solve their problem. You bring all of your expertise to the table, showcasing yourself as the perfect candidate.

Take your time answering questions. There is no rush or penalty if you take a moment to think of sincere and intelligent responses instead of the first thing that comes out of your mouth. You will come across as more truthful and genuine if you pause before answering, rather than rushing to speak quickly. Additionally, make sure you’re listening carefully to the interviewer’s questions and don’t be shy if you need to ask clarifying questions to make sure you understand the question. This is not embarrassing -- it’s LISTENING and responding. All humans want to be seen and heard, and in the interview room you want to let the hiring manager know that you’re a good listener (which translates to a good collaborator, good team player and good problem solver -- all things their company needs)!

On your way out, thank them again for their time and thank the receptionist by name as well. Leave an excellent final impression and say that you look forward to hearing from them.

Well done - you did it!
