Interview like a Politician: Study Like it's Finals!

I heard you. I did, I heard you ask for practical advice. So let’s do it. Down and dirty, quick and easy. I’m going to take you through my process of studying for an interview like it’s my senior finals (except the reward is MUCH greater than it was back then ;) ) I use every one of these when I’m getting ready, for as much prep time as I have. Two weeks is ideal, but I can cram and ace an interview over a weekend if I have to.

Here are the Old School Tricks I still use:

  1. Flash Cards

Need help remembering technical terminology or the CEO’s name? Old school study techniques are the best here. Whether you use real index cards or make them on your phone -- Flash cards will cement that info into your brain.

  2. Write out questions you expect to be asked (and the answers!)

Writing longhand helps your brain slow down and think things through without answering impulsively. Pick a few common questions and start there. If you’re having a hard time thinking of some, here are three that I ALWAYS start with because interviewers usually ask them: What Methodology do you currently use?; Walk me through your sales process; Walk me through a campaign you recently did.

  3. Write out your skills and what you bring to the table!

You’re an asset, the answer to their problem, remember? Make sure you’ve practiced speaking about yourself and your experience. Don’t sell yourself short for even one minute. They NEED YOU.

  4. Practice in a Mirror

Tried and true public speaking trick -- get thyself in front of a mirror. See how you fidget and where you put your hands. Listen for your “ums” and “likes” and start to reduce those. Practice looking confident and competent -- because you are!

  5. Journal

“Really Keril? Journaling?” - yep. It sounds cheesy but it’s tried, true and effective. Journal out those fears you have, get them on paper and out of your brain. Practice answering those tricky questions again. Write down all the reasons you’re perfect for this position. This will help, again, slow down your thoughts and cement your reasoning.

And now, you’re ready. Ready to head into that interview room and snag the job. You’ve prepared questions, done your research, and studied like it’s finals. Go forth and GET THAT A!
